Sheila O'Reilly, owner of The Beckenham Bookshop, commissioned Glidden Design to redesign her bookstore based on our previous international experience in the book retailing market. Our aim was to enhance the sense of tradition and charm with architectural elements such as the new hardwood shopfront and tongue and grooved cladding to the sales desk and window display area. In addition, we added dramatic lighting and created focal points at the sides and rear of the store to draw the customers through the space and assist their browsing. The theatrical display at the rear of the shop also doubles up as a stage for authors readings and live performance, establishing the Beckenham Bookshop as a dynamic centre for literature, art and culture.
